Are the mountains still snow capped in December around Milford Sound?

I realise this sounds silly, so apologise in advance....I was just hoping they were.

December is getting into summer in NZ. The alpine ranges will still have snow but the mountains in and around Milford Sound itself will not.

Look at the link I've posted of a travel blog taken in the region in late November... photo 55 & 56 are the views from the lodge and from the sound if you go on a cruise... this is in November. December just gets warmer with even less chance of snow in that locality.

Yes they usually are. Not silly at all. The snow won't melt unless it is very hot.

Claire Blue Says Hi
Yes, I went to Milford a couple of years ago over Christmas, it was strange seeing snow on the side of the road in summer.

Yes - when I drove from Christchurch - Queenstown all the mountains had snowy peaks and it was freezing! I think the hottest day was 10C so make sure you pack warm clothes

Yes usually on the higher ones above 2000m. Its not a silly question. The South Island has a permanent snow line which retreats to about 2500 in summer. In December its sometimes still possible to ski at Mt Hutt if the summer is a little late in arriving and there's been good spring snow. Not so common now with climate warming. Mitre Peak should still have snow on it at Milford. Sometimes its a bit patchy by late November.

Mike G I can see snow on every single photo with a mountain in it. Did you have your eyes shut? One season also doesn't make the norm. Some years summer doesn't come until after Christmas.
