Are there areas of Auckland & Wellington (New Zealand) that are not the safest to stay in?

I am looking at booking accommodation in both of these areas and want to know if there are certain areas best kept away from.

Hey there :)

I recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand and I also have lived there so I can help ya.

Starting with Auckland. I'm sure every area of Auckland would be very safe to stay in, but not perhaps to live in.

Areas I would not really want to stay in in Auckland are: Mangere (where the airport is, although the airport motel would be safe), Otara, Takinini, Papatoetoe, Papakura, Cledon, Manuwera and Otahuhu. Bascially most of South Auckland, although you should be fine staying there, just don't go out alone at night for a walk.

Some parts of West Auckland would be a bit dodgy such as New Lyn, Kelston and Mount Roskill (south west Auckland).

The best areas to stay in Auckland would be in the city (although there is a bit of crime in the CBD too), the North Shore, the eastern Bays (suburbs include Mission Bay, Parnell and Remuera) and bascially anywhere that looks nice.

Auckland is a very safe city so you should be alright. If you do stay in one of the areas I have mentioned that are a bit shady, just make sure you lock up your hire car, motel room etc. You should be fine mate :)

Now to Wellington. I recently stayed in Wellington. We stayed at the Wellington airport motor lodge which is actually in the suburbs but is right near the airport.

That was really nice. Friendly service with breakfast in bed! It was safe there although we were woken up at 4am on our first morning in nz by drunks going past swearing and banging on the bars on the fence outside the window lol. But yes it is safe haha. The guy from the motel even came and picked us up from the airport at 1 in the morning! Free of charge!

Anywhere in the city is good. We once stayed in Wellington city at night and it was great. We walked down to the harbour at night which is perfectly safe and got an ice -cream.

The only areas I wouldn't really want to stay in, in the Wellington region would be Porirua (just north of the city), Newtown, and some parts of the Hutt valley (which is sort of out of the way anyway).

But yes, you will be safe in NZ, it is a very safe country.

When your're in Wellington, make sure you drive up to Mount Victoria at night and take a look at the view! It's awsum!

Oh yeah. Oriental Parade would be a lovely place to stay at. It's right on the water :)

Thanks for the question and have a good time in New Zealand :)

Email me if you have any questions.

Thanks again :)

Stay away from South Auckland - it's a well known crime infested area with murders and whatnot occuring on a weekly basis. I recommend staying somewhere central, or on the more upmarket North Shore.

As for Wellington, I recommend avoiding Upper Hutt and Porirua.
