You have been had. Don't believe all you see on the net.
The spider in the photo is not a genus found in NZ.
The biggest in NZ is the "Avondale" spider, found only in a suburb of Auckland. It's quite harmless and the largest would be about 3/4 the size of the one in the photo.
The most dangerous things you'll find in the NZ bush are sandflies. They bite and the itch can remain for hours. They are about the size of the letter i in this text, they squash easily and a good spray of repellant will keep them at bay.
In the north there are also mosquitos to contend with. |

There are spiders in NZ, but most are not dangerous, and most will be hiding. As for snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas, no, nada,d'rein. The only thing dangerous about hiking in NZ is if you twist your ankle. |

Officially there are no snakes in NZ but occasionally customs finds one in a shipping container or in an imported car.
I am told that New Zealand's most dangerous spider is the Katipo Spider but that is endangered so you shouldn't need to worry.
Have fun in NZ |

LOL, what pictures were you looking at? sure they weren't zoomed?
There are no snakes in NZ with the very rare exception of the odd water snake.
There are very few poisonous or large spiders. And they aren't aggressive.
And there are absolutely no scorpions.
I've never ever seen a spider in NZ anywhere near resembling that.
Are you sure this website's not taking the piss? |

Hey there
There are no snakes in New Zealand but we have a few spiders; There are no tarantulas or scorpians in the wild (maybe at zoo's etc)
You will likely not even see many spiders while you are out, unless your specifically go looking for them under rocks etc. |

No snakes and no big spiders like that. There of course are spiders like every other country but not all are poisonous, harmful and big.
Very beautiful bush!
Very safe country when coming to spiders, insects, animals etc.
Come on over and see us. |

Keep your name !!!!
Its cute
You have just as much right to call yourself Kiwi and I will tell you why.
Kiwifruit used to be called Chinese Gooseberry ,cept NZers changed the name because they grew them better and exporting overseas the name had to easily identified with NZ.
Kiwibird ...awww cute and endangered. |

Nothing overly dangerous in New Zealand. Except the Katipo spider. But no one sees that. Ever lol.. |

Why do you call yourself Kiwi? You're obviously not one. What makes you think you can steal a name like that?
There are NO snakes in New Zealand. There are many spiders but most of them are harmless. You will have the odd brush with a cobweb in the bush. The poisonous ones are the katipo, the redback and the whitetail. Both the redback and the whitetail were introduced by accident, the whitetail is common in a few places like the Nelson and Timaru, the redback is still fairly uncommon, the katipo is very rare. The Katipo doesn't live in the bush, very few people have ever seen one. I've never seen a redback , but I have seen a few whitetails and I've seen the result of the bite. Thats the one you should watch out for but it doesn't live in the bush, it normally is found in houses.
You've got to kill 'em when you see 'em. Take some spray and learn how to stomp 'em.
NO Tarantulas, no scorpions. |
