Attractions in New Zealand, backpacking, canyonning etc?

I might be going to New Zealand next year (i'm deciding between NZ and the UK) and i want to know some good spots to backpack, paraglide, bungee jump, canyonning, or anything like that. It doesn't have to be in one particular spot, i'd be there for a year so i'd have plenty of time to travel. thanks :)

New Zealand really is a paradise for adventure travellers who want to do all these exciting activities. We are also entrepreneurial .........both bungy jumping and zorbing were originally from New Zealand.

You can do all those activities you mention and more. Because we have a lot of water - sea, lakes and amazing rivers there are all kinds of water activities - jetboatig, white water rafting, blackwater rafting, kayaking, sailing. We have mountains so you have all the mountain activities including heliskiing, we have beautiful bush for both short and long walks, hikes, tramps - 5 minutes to 5 days!

Then there is plenty of wind so great for parasailing, hanggliding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, blokart(landsailing) skydiving, etc

From here you can try other fascinating activities such as swimming with dolphins, whale watching, visiting bird colonies....the list goes on.

The most well known areas for much of this are Bay of Islands, Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo, West Coast of the South Island, Queenstown, Wanaka, Chrsitchurch...........to name but a very few.

If you have a year you should be able to move around the country .If you plan to work Queenstown is the adrenaline dream destination..........but it would depend on where there was work and the visa you had.

Have a look here for more information on activities and destinations where you can do them - http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com

Well that pretty much covers all of NZ there are not many spots that you cant do any of those.
If your here for a year start in the North Island and work your way down the country saving the best till last the South Island (yes Im bias)

The Outdoors is what NZ is all about.

you can do all that fairly cheap on the south island nz ..been there many times

Well Queenstown is the adventure captial of the world, where you can go bungey jumping, paragliding, jet boating, skiing among other things.

You can go parachuting all over the place....an interesting one is to go from the North Island to the South Island, but there are some over the Marlborough Sounds etc.

You can go white water rafting over the place as well, and you can also go black water rafting in a few places as well.
You can surf, fish, tramp (hike), bike ( including mountain biking), zorbing........
Look at the websites for some help....i think there is more to offer than the UK on that front!.

LOL, I don't know of any Canyons in NZ, but we do have Alpine valleys aplenty.

Anyway, the place where all of that stuff is most immediately convenient is Queenstown. Then Wanaka. But those places aren't the cheapest places to do all that.

All of that outdoor stuff's convenient from anywhere, even Auckland. And while it might be a 3 hour drive it can be both cheaper and better than Queenstown. If you're going to be here a year let me know if it's purely for travel or if it's a working holiday, an internship or whatever adn I can make some definite recommendations.
