Auckland.. what the hell is with the crime rate?

I just returned from a holiday to New Zealand and all you heard on the news was violence in Auckland.

In the time I was in NZ (7 days) this is what happend in Auckland:

1. A man beaten to death in a road rage attack.
2. A girl walking home from the dairy drugged and raped by a complete stranger in broad day light!
3. A pensionar badly beaten in a retirement home invasion!
4. A taxi driver beaten and robbed
5. A dairy robbed north of Auckland
6. A man bashed during a home invasion in Papakura.
7. A man found in a burnt out house and it's being treated as suspicous.

I mean? What the hell? Why is it like this? How can anyone possibly enjoy living in Auckland?

New Zealand seems so safe UNTIL you turn on the news. I did not see one 'sus' looking person when I was over there. And yet, there's so much crime.

Why is that so? It worries me. Lots of South Africans move to Auckland to get away from the crime I have picked up. Is it really that safe?

Thanks in advance :)

8: A man was bashed and gagged by his tenant and robbed of his car and money.

News sucks really. I don't watch the news anymore because all it does is tell you all the bad stuff in the country/world.

I've said it before, NZ's crime ain't so bad compared to other OECD countries. Sure we have crime and horrible things happen but it ain't all bad, there is nice heartfelt stories out there too.

My neighbours got burgled while they slept last night. I was rather freaked when the police knocked on my door, but at least I'm aware and I'm pretty safe in my Fort Knox. The neighbours left their house unlocked... and they think it was someone (maybe kids) they know.

People need to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions like: locking up, walking in pairs etc in well-let, open areas, don't open a door to a stranger etc. I think a lot of people aren't so security conscious, and saly they should be.

There's over a million people in the greater Auckland area and much of it's on the the third world border in terms of socio-economics.
Look at the crime rate in US cities of comparable size and economy.

Part of it is media sensationalism too. There's isn't much else to report on, it sells papers and it helps promote political agendas the papers owners prefer.

It's pretty bad but it's not THAT bad.

Yeah tell me about it mate; i've been overseas in the United States for the last three years and always heard the bad things going on. I felt safer walking the streets or New York than little old Auckland. Its a joke, they need to serriously look at this.

Yeah its mainly south auckland and the wannabe gansta's lol.

It's not as high as some international cities out there.

It's very scary. I'm a kiwi living in Australia i read the Herald every other day and I'm worried to bits about the crime rate back home. Alot of this is due to drugs and bored teenagers.. they have nothing better to do because lack of jobs and community help. i'm sick of hearing about gang members recruiting young ones to do their dirty work.. These old farts are to dam lazy to get out there and really help these young people in a positive manner.

NZ is still a safe place to be, and South Auckland is just one area that lets us down time and again!! Auckland is safe enough the media also lets us down...

These sorta crimes has been going on for ages, and yes, perhaps has gotten significantly worse with the whole P epidemic but to be honest I think the main reason is that the media are now reporting on more and more national stories than what they were so people are more aware of violent crimes being committed.

Well its a tough time right now, thousands of jobs are being cut and heaps of people are on the verge of losing their jobs.

Its not that much of crime, cause USA don't report EVERY crime onto the telly or news, unless its major. But where as New Zealand, people who are missing even go on the news.
