Go The Naki
Here is what you get in each island:

North Island:
- About 3 million people
- Warmer climate
- Nice beaches
- Heaps of stuff to do in the towns and cities all across the island
- Wellington, New Plymouth and Rotorua are the best cities to go to

South Island:
- About 1 million people
- Really cold in the winter (if you are going to come to NZ in the winter - June until August - it will be cold everywhere though).
- Massive mountain range - the Southern Alps
- Long hiking tracks
- Christchurch and Queenstown

Great place to go! Meet lots of other young people and nice places to go. But its more popular with slightly older travellers than the many oung ones going around Australia.
Went to NZ twice in 2005 and 2006. I hitchiked alot. You can do that there. You get lots of lifts and meet many characters that way,and its free!
If you tour on public transport,DONT get a busspass. You have to use the same bus company and thats not convenient, and you end up with unused miles. There are always cheaper discounted deals on each leg of the way,and lifts going from other travellers.
If you buy a car,its hard to get a good deal in early season (Sept)and hard to sell in late summer(March). Vise versa can get you a great deal, but then its not summer.
Hostels are getting a bit expensive, especially the modern ones.Sometimes you can stay in a univ campus for cheap,if you stay for a week or more.
Good to get a lonely planet guide book, and see where you want to go and things to do,places to stay.Saves you money and time wasting when there.
Train journeys in the south are fantastic -Trans Alpine pass! Milford Sound. Queenstown is very nice.

I spent 2 months backpacking around NZ and thoroughly enjoyed it. I used the Kiwi Experience hop on hop off backpacking bus but there's also Magic bus which is a little more quieter!

All the hostels are very good and have kitchens so you can save money by cooking your own meals.

The Travellers Lounge is a good site for backpacking as you can check hostel prices, average daily costs and flights.

Depends what kind of sites you are interested in.

Busy with lots of people that wouldn't give you the time of day, or a smaller more welcoming town that would invite into their home.

Your choice, no matter where you go in New Zealand there is always an adventure to be had.

Be sure to always drop into the local pub. The longer you stay the more people you meet. Lol

Go to the Milford Track. Look it up on the net. I saw it on the travel channel. It takes like 4 days to hike and has low cost to high end places to sleep while hiking. I plan on doing it when my youngest son turns 18. Until then I have a few years to get back into shape so that I can conquer it.
