Coming from someone that has worked in that industry, I have to ask if you are wanting multinational brands with new fleet and nationwide coverage or a local one with slightly older fleet?
If you are going to go with one of the big 5 (Budget, Hertz, Avis, Thrify, Europcar) they are all very similar in their cars and service, however Budget is the cheapest and best value with brand new vehicles and multiple branches nationwide.
If you're on a more strict budget, I would reccommend one of the small players such as Apex or NZ Car hire. You also need to see if they allow things such as one-way hires and have airport locations etc.

Apex car rentals are pretty good. They have multiple branches and should be able to help you out

Apex Car Rentals , as mentioned in the above answers.

One of the best companies I have ever worked for too,

Email: enquiries@apexrentals.co.nz
Website: http://www.apexrentals.co.nz

hope this helps.

Juicy Rentals (formerly Ezy). Good cars at a good price, professional operation.

Remember that if you are from the US your credit card rental protection probably won't apply in NZ.
