Best place for me to surf in Auckland? |
Hi,
I'm a beginner surfer and looking for somewhere safe to learn to surf near Auckland.
Only 2 places that seem to be good for surfing near Auckland are Piha and Bethells beach but I have heard they are for good surfers only?
Any advice?
Thanks |

They are certainly both beaches where it is not advisable for beginners. Both are quite dangerous beaches. Tawharanui , out from Warkworth is popular for beginner surfers. You would need to check the weather forecast as some days there is no surf, but other days it is very good. Orewa also sometimes has surf. That is the one beauty of Auckland - at least one coast will have the surf up.Omaha is opposite Tawharanui.
Muriwai on the West Coast is probably a little safer than Piha but still like any west coast beach better for the experienced - you should surf where there are life guards, and plenty of people around.
Those are the closest to Auckland. If you are happy to drive a couple of hours there is Waihi - south and Mangawhai up north .

auckland is not too well known for it's great surf beaches except piha, which can be verrryyy rough, not suitable for beginners. same with bethells
i learnt to surf in whangamata, about 3 hours from auckland and generally anything on the EAST coast is safe for beginner surfers. closer to auckland there is omaha which is north of the city, orewa etc
muriwai is okay, but again a little rough
i would advise you to either start at an east coast beach or get lessons from a qualified instructor, they have lessons at muriwai and orewa from memory there might be others too |
