Can anybody give me some info on where to stay in New Zealand?

Hi

My girlfriend and I are going to travelling next year and would like to spend a few months in New Zealand. we were thinking of travelling around for a month but prior to that renting a flat somewhere and working for a couple of months.

Can anybody recommend a good place to set up home for 2 months? Which area of New Zealand is likely to best suit us i.e. cheap to rent, can find work, plenty of attractions to go and see.

Thanks for your help

SOUTH ISLAND IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TO SOUTH ISLAND. HEHE MAYBE BECAUSE I WAS BORN THERE. GO TO LIKE QUEENSTOWN, DUNEDIN OR INVERCARGILL BUT IN THE NORTH ISLAND, AUCKLAND IS LIKE AN AMAZING BIG CITY!!!! ^^ COME BY SOMETIME IN AUCKLAND TOO THE CPAITAL CITY OF NEW ZEALAND. SOUTH ISLAND IS NOT CHEAP THOUGH. IT'S A SPEICAL PLACE SO IF YOU WANT SOMETHING A BIT CHEAP.. TRY NORTH ISLAND IN AUCKLAND. LOL GOODLUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

It depends on the sort of work you are wanting to do. Fruit picking or jobs like that would be in Hawkes Bay or around Otago. Unfortunately places that have plenty of attractions and work are also going to probably be more expensive for accommodation. Places like Queenstown, Auckland or any city will have jobs in cafes, fast food, etc, plenty of attractions - but not sure about cheap rental possibilities!

You can have a look at the rental section of http://www.trademe.co.nz to get an idea of rentals.

You would also need to check our immigration regulations re working. http://www.immigration.govt.nz

It would be best to go there first, travel around and then choose where you would like to live for a couple of months based on your travels and the place that you preferred most. That's what I would do.

Another tip: look for a job in a hotel/resort where they will give you free rent while you're working there :)

ChristChurch is lovely. Absolutely beautiful.

Try here:

Or here:

Once you've finished with the house you can sell it again.

Hope this helps; happy new-zealanding!!

Hello,

It depends what kind of work you would like to do. If you wanted to work for a couple of months fruit picking or similar - a rural location is probably best. Or if you are looking for professional contract work you can contact recruitment agencies - Wellington is often a good bet for short term professional work because lots of government agencies get funding for short term projects, though I am sure the other cities also get their fair share of short term contracts.

In terms of where to settle for those two months...
In my opinion, Auckland often feels like NZ's big city it gets a good amount of international theatre and concerts. It has a good mix of city and relaxing beach atmosphere. It has NZ's most temporate climate and the weather up the top of the North island is often a couple of degrees warmer than the rest of the country.
Wellington - advertises it as being a bit of an alternative city, there is a great mix of students and professionals and it has an amazing number of brilliant cafes, bars and restaurants. I am currently living in Wellington and I love it. It is also really close to a number of great beaches. It is true though that it is a windy city and while you do get used to it after a while, the first couple of strong wind days can be really challenging.
Christchurch - is a quieter city than the above two, that said it is my favourite city to go and relax in. It is really flat and very easy to navigate and has wonderful botanic gardens and a great park to go and relax in right in the middle of the city. It also has wonderful beaches very close by.

NZ is a pretty accessable country and all of the cities and towns give easy options for day trips etc. NZ's attractions are mostly of the natural variety and again it varies whether you are wanting Ski, visit the wine counties etc.

I would agree with other posters who say if you can travel for 2 weeks or so before hand to get a feel of the country and see where you want to settle. Or contact some recruitment agencies and see where you can get the best job!

Good luck

Auckland is great cause u could go to the country area we there is SO MANY sheep did u know nz has more sheep than people or you could go to the city part with like SHOPPING,Bundge jumping you can do it on the skytower, and stuff ike that

Edward Cullen is so hot.
You should stay at Paihia Pacific Resort Hotel Bay of Islands‎,Edgewater Palms - A Clarion Collection Hotel‎,Swiss Chalet Lodge‎. If you what more go to maps and tape in hotels in Paihia, New zealand or tape in hotels in New Zealand. I would stay at the firsh one because I stayed there with my family before.
