a rebate and refund are two totally different things in a taxation equation however they are affectively (not effectively) the same thing.
The first part is the rebates portion; these are formulae that offset your particular circumstances - this includes but is not limited to your age, your workable time (over the fiscal period divided into 52 weeks) and total taxable period. There are a few more categories that are worked into the formula for rebates.
The second (which is to a degree already worked into the rebate structure) is total tax paid (already paid over the fiscal period and the remaining amounts from previous periods if not already claimed or any provisional taxes you have paid toward offset for next encumbered period).
Losses are also carried over into this section and are relevant when claiming the rebate (you can not claim a refund on losses - it is bore by the rebate on total amount of expenses depending on TYPE of cost.
Even if you are on a sickness benefit it may prove worthwhile to have your taxes filed. But be wary - I have been to IRD lately and they seem to be now employing dunces. WINZ taxes their "clientele at 20 to 21 percent on average - this helps to offset any unforeseen adjustments - the national tax rate for under 38000 is 19 percent or just over. I have filed taxes for many people in the recent past - one guy was owed in excess of $NZ16000.00 for unpaid family assistance and wrong tax code being implemented while on a benefit (he was ex-army who was forced to retire to take care of his young kids). This example is not isolated. I know a now high profile person who was owed $70,000 odd. IRD are as only as the good as the people behind the desk. Do not be intimidated by them.
If you are on a sickness benefit - it is your right to be assessed as a working person/s as it is assumed by the government and internal affairs that if you were not on a sickness benefit - you would be in fulltime employment. |

Depends on many factors.
Did you earn under a certain amount
Were you working 2 jobs at the same (eg were you getting taxed secondary)
What age are you.
Best bet is to see the IRD site and search through
