Assuming you have a campervan there should be no problem finding a spot. Check this site http://www.rental.net.nz/freedom-camping-new-zealand.html
Freedom camping with a small tent would perhaps be more difficult. There will be many spots that look suitable that may say no camping. You would need to check with the information centre in Queenstown as to where it is permissible, as there are council by laws.Often picnic areas for instance do not allow camping.A camper van is just a parked vehicle so a bit different.

The answer is a definite NO.
The Queenstown and Lakes District Council has a by-law that prohibits any freedom camping within 10km of any settlement in its area.
The NZ Motor Caravan Association is at present in consultation to get this by-law reviewed in respect of certified self contained motor homes and campervans
