It really depends on how much time you want to spend there and where else you are going to.
You could do things in a few days....or if you are based there and want to do other things outside the city ( and stay there).

Its the largest city in the South Island....but there are such lovely things to see elsewhere....ie in the country...that if it were my choice I would focus on other places......I love Christchurch and have lived there on and off for years.....but there are some STUNNING places on the West Coast, Mt Cook area etc....but if you want to shop etc then chch is the place to go...as I said a few days would be a good time to get your feel for the place and do a few things.

Well, that depends on what was your intended stay in NZ is for and if you are refering to Christchurch city. I have been to South Island twice (each visit of around 14 days) and I prefers the nature life there.
So, on both occassions, my family and I spend around 2~3 days in Christchurch city before heading out to return home. Any more time you have on hand, I would suggest heading outside Christchurch. Like a pleasant drive to Akaroa.

Not more than 2 days.

I would not miss a bike tour in the Summit road for breathtaking views over Christchurch, the Southern Alps, Pegasus Bay, Lyttelton Harbour and Banks Peninsula
