Coming to auckland for new years eve,are there any celebrations and what is the best place to view them? |
we are in our 50,s and want to know what is the best place to see any celebrations in Auckland (2008).
Ideally a nice restaurant or place to eat or party with a veiw of any fireworks would be ideal.
thanks |

Well for someone in their 20s I'd suggest to go to the Mount. But for someone wanting a nice quiet evening (which I also prefer sometimes) I'd suggest to make a booking down at the viaduct as soon as possible. There are many restuarants in the viaduct and the view from the viaduct is amazing.
As for fireworks, there aren't many big gatherings as there are in places like Sydney, but the Sky Tower has a fireworks show every new years. There are many restuarants in the Sk Tower itself and in the buildings connected to the Sky Tower. You can see the fireworks from the Sky Tower from pretty much anywhere in the Auckland region because of its size (the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere last I heard) |

If you are in Auckland (where I live), you can watch the fireworks at the skytower. The skytower is a fun (but rather expensive) place to visit (it is a casino amongst other things), but watching the fireworks is free.
This website tells you what was on in Auckland last New Year. If you go to Google NZ, and type in "Auckland New Years Eve Celebrations", you might just find something. Good Luck ~ and I hope you enjoy your travels around NZ :-)

The sky tower has a revolving restaurant that you can eat at :-) |

Go up One Tree Hill to watch the awesome fireworks at the sky tower. There are also quite a few nice restaurants in the Epsom/One Tree HIll area e.g. One Tree Grill or at cornwall park there is a really nice restaurant called the Winter Garden Pavilion but i don't think it has a very good vantage point of the sky tower... |

That depends on where the fireworks are lit. I was in NZ for three months recently and it is the most beautiful country I have ever seen. Auckland is huge, and there are heights that you can view the displays from, One Tree Hill, Mount Eden, but perhaps these places are far away and will diminish your enjoyment, though you will see everything from there. I suggest going out on the water in a boat, that way you can see clearly from Auckland harbour, that is where they light them off anyway, I believe. |
