K-Bear and Sailzar named some good places to see!

http://www.newzealand.com/travel/destinations/regions/regions-home.cfm - I would personally recommend you start at the top of the North Island and start working you way down to the South Island.

Ive never been to the South Island, But places you shouldn't miss in the North Island are: Cape Reinga, Bay of Islands - Paihia, Russell, Waitangi and of course Rotorua!

Walk 90 mile beach, Swim at Kai iwi lakes, Dive the poor knights and See the hole in the rock all on the North Island.

My sister recently came back from a trip on New Zealands North Island and you can expect to take some amazing photos like these:

Also if you go to Waitangi make sure you check out http://nzinfo.com/culturenorth/index.html (My cousins happen to perform in this lol)

And last but not least if your really bored and you happen to pass through Kawakawa you can visit the famous toilet blocks http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/photographs/hundertwassers_ultimate_stand.htm

One thing you must try before you leave NZ is a kina! Enjoy your time there.

(Note: My sister went to NZ for this: http://img381.imageshack.us/my.php?image=staceynz540smalldx5.jpg lol)

You are spoilt for choice in NZ that’s for sure. I spent half my life there and been there done that on most things. Since I lived in the south island (which is better anyhow) I’ll give you some ideas’.

Marlborough / Picton – The Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com/ You can take the ferry from Wellington into Picton – top of the south island.

Nelson, the sunniest place in NZ! – http://www.nelsonnz.com Abel Tasman National Park, http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/PlaceProfile.aspx?id=38455 Golden sand beaches, Awaroa Lodge, http://www.awaroalodge.co.nz swim with the seals, http://www.sealswim.com You can hike down one way and take an aqua taxi back or even kayak.

Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz

Christchurch, the garden city - http://www.christchurchnz.net/visitchch

Wanaka – Lake Wanaka - http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/index.cfm/Home

Queenstown http://www.queenstown-nz.co.nz is the adventure capital of NZ – especially for EXTREME adventure – must do’s Bungy jumping, AJ Hackett - http://www.ajhackett.co.nz The world famous Shotover Jet doing full 360º spins! http://shotoverjet.co.nz

Start at the top of the North Island Cape Reinga and continue your journey down to the bottom of the South Island which is Invercargill. Everything in between is great.

I did the same thing a few years ago (but bought a campervan as it worked out cheaper that way.) New Zealand's so beautiful you can't go far wrong. I could be here forever, so I'll just mention a few places

North Island: visit the amazing Kauri trees in the far North, See the volcanos in Tongariro National park & walk the Tongariro crossing,

South Island: Take the ferry over to Stewart Island, Camp on the shores of Lake Tekapo, Climb Fox Glacier, Kayak on Milford Sound, see sealions and penguins in the Catlins, Hangglide in Queenstown........

................and so much more!

Ahh! I want to go back. You'll love it and taking a campervan is the best way to go. Get a list of campsites from the DoC (Department of Conservation). Their campsites (usually just a toilet, if you're lucky) are in the most amazing locations. I think it's fine to just park up wherever though.

Oh, and I'd recommend breakdown cover!

sailzar
depending on your age....
Would not recommend as a Family thing more of ages 18-30!
if you want a boozy time at new years consert and fire works the best place to go is Paihia in the Bay of Islands at the top of the North Island, i went there for new years 3 years in a row it is awesome!!
