You could head out west to Piha and Bethell's Beach, but the commute takes forever and you can't rely on public transport.
Mission Bay is beautiful, but it's not outside Auckland! North Shore is expensive and again the commute is pretty rotten.
Check out a map of the wider Auckland area to find places on the coast, but bear in mind that public transport here sucks and any commute by car during peak times will take at least an hour.
Try www.wises.co.nz, search for Auckland and zoom in on the map till you can see the surrounding areas.
http://www.travelindex.co.nz/maps/northland-auckland also can give you a general idea.

What about Mission Bay? Only a ten minute bus ride to the centre of Auckland.

If you're working in the CBD and don't mind getting a boat to work then I would recommend Devonport on the North Shore. Boat takes 10 mins but you feel very removed from the city over there. Good cafes, nice beaches and great views of the city.

The traffic situation in NZ sucks, and that's being kind. I'm from USA and am on a two year contract in Auckland. The best motorways here are pathetic, not much more that the secondary roads in the states. Auckland has the roads of a small midwestern town in the USA. To get anywhere in Auckland takes and act of God. Live in Australia and work there too, it's better over there.
