Cost of Living in Timaru, New Zealand?

Hi,
Can one survive on NZ$35,000 per annum in Timaru, Ne Zealand?
Can there be any considerable savings given that the money is spent by only one person, no family. Preference is to stay in a flat and not live an expensive lifestyle. No expenses on drinks because I don't take alcohol.
Need your views please.
Thanks

Hi there,

I would say you could live very easily and fairly comfortably on 35,000 in Timaru.
Tax is 19.5 cents per dollar so you would be taking home close to $550 a week.
when you say flatting would you just be renting on your own? or looking to move in with others? you could get a decent 2 bedroom flat to rent on your own in Timaru for $170 a week. Groceries maybe $75 a week, other bills such as phone and power are monthly. I reckon you could probably save $100 a week and still have money to spare.
to give you an idea of rent costs check out: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Property/RegionListings.aspx?search=1&mcat=0350-5748-4233-&sidebar=1&132=FLAT&selected135=&selected136=&134=3&135=64&29=&122=&122=&59=&59=&sort_order=prop_default&v=gallery
this link takes you directly to houses/flats currently for rent in timaru
there's also a flatmates wanted section on this same site http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Property/RegionListings.aspx?search=1&mcat=2975-&sidebar=1&76=2975&selected135=&selected136=&134=3&135=64&122=&122=&59=&59=&sort_order=prop_default&v=
If you were to move in to a flat with others already in it you could get by on as little as $75 rent a week.

Owning a car would be the other major expense to consider. Petrol is $2.13 a litre now so it can cost upwards of $100 to fill a car up!

Hope this helps, Good luck
