Coud someone tell me , is it possible to live in Christchurch in New Zealand on 20000 nZ dol per year?

I have entered there on PhD studies.
By "live" I mean ,normal life, not to go to restuarants every days ,but more or less live. Particularly I am interested in accomadation situations, like prices for small single room appartments.
I will be vey thanksful for your help!
Thanks in advance!

I would say no- you'll probably have to get another job to supplement that income (although you may be able to earn additional income through the department as a GA or tutor). But it really depends on what your basis of comparison is, and what standard of living you consider "normal."

Check on trademe.co.nz if you want to get a feel for what things will cost (like used furniture, and rent).

Yes, it can be done. That's about $1.660 a month. It's perfectly possible to find student accommodation in shared housing arrangements for about $400 a month. Add your share of the power bill to have a warm place ($80), food ($400 if you're a glutton who likes wine and cooks at home, like me), and you still have about just under $800 at your disposal to do with as you please.
This is good money for a single, young person, and it can go a long way if you're smart. As a PhD Student, I suspect you are.
;)
Good Luck with your studies.

Yes according to the tax department a single person only needs $12.000 year after tax to live what sort of living that is Im not really sure.
$20.000 for a year in NZ id be getting a part time job if I were you and accommodation is cheaper if you get into a flatting situation sharing with others as for price well that's a open book all depends on what/where you want to live in chch and the small single room apartments Ive seen are dives not something id want to pay my hard earned $$$ for.

For a single person yes, but you will have to be watch your money. A good website to check out costs is http://www.emigratenz.org/cost-of-living-in-new-zealand.HTML. You can save money by sharing a flat with several other people, instead of renting.

Enjoy your stay in New Zealand, and good luck with your studies.

If that is after tax, so you have $20,000 in hand then it is possible but it would be tight. You will have to have a realistic budget in place and make sure you stick to it.

If you still have to subtract tax from the given amount then it will become nearly impossible to live off.

I think you can forget having your own flat, but there will be plenty of flatshare oppertunities around where you share a house with other students or working professionals. Try to find something with all bils included as this will make budgeting easier.

I would also say no..you would need to live in a cheap flat with cheap stuff and eat in...or just find some bargin places...then you would be able to exist as students learn to exist while they are studying! Join the club!

check out websites for accomodation (google them on google.co.nz) & you will have your answer. I suspect it would be possible in Chch, but not in Auckland. There are other alternatives like renting a caravan (very cheap) & paying a small amount to have it in the yard of someone's property & just pay a small amount for power re being connected from your caravan & showers in the house. Should be ok as long as you are predominantly using the caravan as your living space, instead of their house.

Most NZers live with others rather than get a studio apartment as it's cheaper & more fun to live with other people.

yes you could do it ,,,may people in n z , welfare is only 12,oooo a year and they have too i would think 20,000 is heaps ..but you have to be careful with the money
