Day trips from NZ port cities? |
My sis and I are taking a 14 day cruise that stops in basically every city listed as a category for NZ. I know cruises aren't the way to really get out and see everything but I kind of like them for an overview of a new place. Shore excursions are a rip off. Any serious recommendations for what we should see in an 8 hour period of any of the major NZ port towns? We both would prefer absorbing a little bit of real NZ life over snapping pics of a tourist trap.

Auckland - If you wanna check out shops get into the city and check out the ones in the streets near the sky tower. You could always go up the sky tower aswell maybe eat at the revolving restraunt or even jump off it or walk along the outside if you're interested in that. Or check out the newmarket shops and check out any westfeild malls you run into. I reckon Auckland has a good bunch of souvinear shops near the sky tower.
Tauranga -Check out the mainstreet shops. Swimming with dophins.
Napier - Its Aquarium, defently!
Wellington - I live here. The port is extremly close to the main shops. Take a glimse at the beehive then I suggest walk down lambton key and check out all the shops, along there go up the cable car and go to the boutanical gardens and check out the veiw. Or just miss that and head through to courtenay place, Then head to Te Papa - its a really good musuem and all the tourists love it, then go to oriental bay and hang out at the beach if you want. Then walk back along side the water or back through the shops.
Lytillton - catch a bus into Christchurch- Options are Check out the central city and shops. the Botanic Gardens, The Arts Centre and Art Gallery maybe? Cathedral Square, Antarctic Centre, Willowbank Wildlife Reserve (good for seeing kiwis) and be introduced to the maori culture! You could also go to Orana Wildlife Park if you're interested in a zoo. And go to a park christurch seems to have a lot of them lol
Dunedin - Otago Museum, Baldwin Street (the worlds steepest street), Cadbury World, Wildlife Cruises (penguins, seals.. etc.)
Hopefuly that helps is the kinda stuff you want to do.
