Te Papa - an interesting museum with lots of interactive and modern exhibits.

The Beehive - our parliamentary buildings

Botanic gardens - nice place to relax. Can get there by cable car.

Wellington Zoo - Fun place to spend an afternoon. Has a cool nocturnal house with bats in it!

Te Papa (the museum) is a must, even if you don't think of yourself as a museum type of person. The YHA is a great place to stay.

karori wildlife santurary, and shops

The cable car ride was fun. It takes you to a very high point in wellington, so you have a great view! There's a space observatory, and Victoria university campus also. You can either take the cable car back down, or iopt to walk down the trail which is cool, ciz it has great scenery!

Oh, you could also go to the movie theatre where they had the King Kong premier. Forgot where it is, somewhere on the main road. It's a cool theatre, really glam setting from the 40's and 50's.

Te Papa - but better than that is 'The museum of city and sea'.
Wellington is the cultural capital of N.Z so you should be able to find some play/musical/opera etc on. Go tot eh info center in Civic Square to find out what is on and book places to stay and transport.
If you want a backpackers go to XBase backpackers. It is right near Courtenay Place where the night life hub is.

Not sure what you are in to so can't be more specific in my info to you.
Have fun in our beautiful city:-)
