Do you think it is too cold to camp in New Zealand in October?

We are thinking about camping in New Zealand as we go around the South Island. Do you think this might be a bit too cold or is it reasonable weather? We are fairly experienced campers but I am NOT keen on camping in sub-zero weather. What do you think?

It is going into summer so should not be too bad although there is no knowing. It could be cool. But still OK for camping I would say. There is not going to be sub zero temperatures at that time of year. It is spring. Christchurch in November gets the Nor wester winds and can actually be really quite hot! Our weather is very variable and you can get unpredictable weather. It is most likely to be around 12-15 degrees celsius sometimes higher sometimes a bit lower. Cooler at night 5-10 degrees celciusYou would be unlucky to get snow or really cold in October.

Have a look at the chart on this page http://www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/about-new-zealand/weather-and-climate.html

There is some info on weather here too http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com

And this

Hope this helps.

no way that wouldn't be too cold! well not sub-zero anyway, all the major southern tramping tracks open up again at the end of October (i.e milford track, kepler, routeburn etc) and that involves people tenting in amongst the mountains (if not staying in huts)
it will still be cold over night for more info on NZ climate see
http://www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/about-new-zealand/weather-and-climate.html
just be cautious about packing warm clothing for over night, which being experienced campers you probably already know anyway.
enjoy your time here :-)

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere. It's summer there when it's winter here in the U.S.

So in October, it's springtime.

daisyrose
really it in spring summer there then the weather starting to warm up after winter there, nice days but maybe abit nippy at night still

october is nearing the summer months. It should be fine, you may get a little wet but it wont be sub zero

October is a difficult time to give you a prediction on. It can be near summer temperatures or it can be wet and misserable.

I have been camping in North Island in October and woken up with frost covering the tent (I was freezing all night), but then, another year I was able to go swiming in the ocean on the 21 Oct.

My suggestion is: plan for camping but get a list of hostels on the route you are taking, just in case, most hostels in NZ are clean and cheep. The YHA's are particularly good.

I hope you have a lovely trip - my South Island tip would be not to miss the Blue Pools of Haast.

It still can get a bit chilly at night, unless you camp close to the Mountains etc If you have good camping gear there shouldn't be any problems with the cold....The East Coast of Gisborne has free camping along the shorelines from around 27th October onwards...have a lovely holiday!

You're unlikely to get sub-zero temps in October but it will get cold at night (particularly the further south you get). Although your definition of cold will depend on where in the world you are coming from.

Yes. In October it will be spring so it's not that cold. I wouldn't recommend camping round the south island in July...totally different story.

There won't be any sub-zero temperatures in October, not unless you actually plan on going up any mountains. With good equipment (check the temperature rating on your sleeping bag) you can camp in NZ at any time of the year, but it is best from Sept-March.
