Does New Zealand have much shorter days in the winter? |
I am moving to Wellington next year and just wondered if the nights will draw in there as much as they do here in the UK, where it can begin to get dark as early as 3pm! |

It definitely doesn't get dark at 3pm here. I remember when I first went to the UK and I think that was something that I was completely unprepared for - the early dark in Winter.
It gets dark in Winter at around 5pm. The one thing I would say is that it gets dark quite quickly. So, by 530pm it is very dark (not dusk).
Summer it is light until around 830pm or 9pm in Wellington. It stays lighter for longer in the South Island (far South, eg Invercargill). |

Yes, New Zeland does have shorter days in the winter. HOWEVER, you have to realize, and I hope that you do, that when it is winter in New Zealand (which is in the southern hemisphere), it is summer in places like New York City (which is in the northern hemisphere). I would also check to see how cold it gets in New Zealand in the winter. I don't think it gets too cold there, but check anyway. Good luck on your travels. |

Honestly, NZ usually has about the same temp all year around, but they do get some cold days. And the winters last just as long as any other country does. |

No, New Zealand winter days are much longer than in the UK.
I know because I used to live in Manchester. Here in Otago, the earliest onset of darkness is about 5pm in mid-winter.
And in Wellington, your winter's day would be longer still. |
