Mee

Does "Upset" also mean "Sad" to anyone?

Just wondering if anyone sees "upset" as also meaning "sad"... Such as in this scenario: if a parent argued you to tears, over some very important privilege that they took from you, would anyone later describe a long cry-session caused by that as "getting rather upset that day"?

yeah, I use it in place of sad all the time.

Well, I believe sad is generally a state of gloomyness, while upset has a stimulus of some kind. Basically, if you're upset, something caused it.

No I don't see it that way.

You might feel sad thinking about a pet you had when you were a child.

You might feel upset if you lose your wallet (full of your ID and $$).

From your questions it seems you are trying to read complicated messages into statements that are mostly likely simple and not intended to mean anything else.

But what you have to remember in asking these questions about emotions and words and emotional words is; what I say and what you hear might just be two very different things... just the same as what you think I said might be what you wanted to hear, and not actually what I meant to say...

Stop trying to analyze the hidden meanings of other people's comments, and if you really want to clarify the issue, perhaps you need to ask the originator - your parent?

Good luck and lighten up!

Yes, though upset is less serious than sad.

And for your scenario it would be upset because it sounds better, well upset also means you are let down.

Jamesmmur
to mean it means like not proud of, ashamed
such such

Oh, certainly. Profuse crying fits the criteria for both. Upset is being emotional disturbed from what you know as your "normal" state to something lower than average. Sad is almost defined by crying today.

sad is a more melancholy and quiet state

upset is a more emotionally disturbed state

yes

i would use upset, not sad because in that situation being upset would be the reaction and sad is just a feeling

GotAnswers?
Yeah, I think so...

I think that sad is more like grieving, glum-gloomy. a more long term thing

while upset is more like a short term thing,

¡muy caliente!
Yes because say I lied to my mother and she found out, she would lose her trust to me and instead of yelling at me, she'd be upset. She wouldn't talk to me.

Chetak.
"getting rather upset that day"?

That would indicate you were sad.

No-
My parents have brought me to tears because I was so mad and "upset" but not sad.. I get sad over depressing things, but not upset. For me they don't mean the same thing.. I can't think of any scenario unless something sad makes me upset :)

It can, yes. It doesn't have to though.

UPSET - Kill someone else.

SAD - Kill myself.
