New Zealand tap water is generally very good. The chlorine is a purifier, and is strong flavoured in some places, but the water is OK to drink.Just unpleasant to taste.
Here is a report on tap water.

As they say, most drinking water that is not acceptable is in remote rural areas or where people have their own water tanks. They may not be properly protected from birds etc.
Some people prefer to buy bottled water because they prefer the flavour, or the perception it is healthier. |

Drunk water from the tap all my life no problem what so ever it's just scare tactics by people trying to sell filters. |

i doubt that there is more chlorine in the tap water than in a pool, as tap water just tastes like tap water not pool water... Nzs tap water does have flouride and goes through normal filtering etc. It is safe to drink i have been drinking it for years with no adverse effects and im not dead from drinking chlorine. NZ isnt a 3rd world country and has the same sort of infrastructure as most developed countries. Filtering will always improve the quality of water no matter where you are will improve it. |

Tap water is fine anywhere in NZ. |

I agree with filters, get them if you can. But I know alot of people that drink tap water (myself included) and we are all fine.
So in summary, from what I know and see (without getting into specifics about chlorine etc etc because I'll leave that to people who know more about me), drinking tap water is fine, but a filter would be better if avaliable |

You can drink tap water everywhere in New Zealand; depending on where you are it will have differing level of chlorine in it. Christchurch water is artesian and entirely free of chlorine - it's beautiful water to drink. Auckland and Wellington are not so good in terms of taste, but it's perfectly safe to drink. |

some places vary. i cant down auckland tap water, its to full of chlorine. but if you go places like b.o.p the water there taste as good as bottled water |

If you happen to go to Petone (just north of Wellington across the harbour) you can get artesian water from a well in Buick Street, near the Petone Baptist Church. People often travel some distance to obtain this water. |

I haven't drunk the tap water in NZ for the last 10 years or so. Alot of people still do though, some do if it's filtered (as in they have a filtering system at home). For me it's bottled water only. |

The chlorine level in tap water is higher than in a pool. Chlorine will kill you. You get the gas from mixing bleach and ammonia, and it will really kill you. Chlorine is very unpleasant stuff.
On a positive note, you can get water filters! I have a PRO SS water filter that goes under the sink and is heavy duty, or you could just get one of those that straps on to the tap. I doubt those filter out chlorine. |
