Speaking English in NZ is pretty important. You should try to enroll in a class because you'll do need it for day to day life. You have a better chance of getting a job if you speak English, but if you don't have the time and need to find work soon, you might be able to find work as kitchen staff in restaurants, farm helpers, grape pickers in wine vineyards.

If you don't have friends or family there, move into a hostel (if you're going to Auckland, I recommend Base Backpackers, it's about $20 NZD and located in the center of Auckland) and search around for spare rooms in apartments or homes. Living with native New Zealanders will help your English.

Don't get me wrong though, there are loads of people in New Zealand that don't speak English and have lived there for years, but they have family and friends that help them out as well. Good luck.

Speaking English will be a necesity as not many NZers speak other languages except immigrant communities. Some NZers can speak french (or other high school language), but not very well in most cases.
If you want a job that isn't something like cleaning dishes, I would advise you to learn English to the best of your ability as no employer will employ you if you're applying for a job that deals with customers, internal staff etc.

You need a work permit(first) in order to work in NZ.
If you can't speak english well, it's hard to get employed.
I suggest you come here to join an English course. As the same time you can have a look around here, and decide the next steps (eg: further study, get employed)
