Interesting place. It is the largest city in the South Island. In general, the city has many notable buildings, monuments, many parks & gardens, restaurants, cafe and arts scene.
Easiest way to explore the city center is to take the Christchurch Tram. The tram will pass by many significant city center sights. Some places to visit at the Cathedral Square, Christ Church Cathedral, victory square, botanic gardens, city mall for shopping, bridge of remembrance, Arts centre, punting on Avon river and many more.

After visiting the city center, visit the nearby Port Hills and Lyttleton. Christchurch is considered as the most English of cities outside England. The cist layout is easy to navigate on foot or bicycle. It is a nice place to visit and I believe you will love it.

Hope that my brief introduction gave you some idea of this place as I have been there twice.

You'll love it. Christchurch is nice, very spread out. Heaps to do. Take a look at http://www.christchurchnz.com and http://www.chchattractions.co.nz

If you want to travel more around NZ I suggest http://www.grabaseat.co.nz - They change their website a few times a day but you can get a real bargin $1 airfares, mainly they are $39-$59... but you have to be quick when you see the fares!

Christchurch is nice. Expect it to be like a city in Germany - clean, nice architecture, good shopping, an abundance of nice restaurants and pubs and bars, and the odd, old church. Some wonderful beaches and scenery close by, too.
I suppose you'll be doing more than spend 4 weeks in Christchurch though? There's Lake Tekapo in the mountains, Queenstown, Hanmer Springs, Milton Sound, Otago peninsula, Marlborough Sound, the vinyards of the Nelson region... I'd invest in a good travel guide and plan this out. This place is a dream.
