For the cheapest deals you would be looking at one of the student flats in Symonds street and surrounding areas. This is where a lot of the uni students and AUT students stay- Khyber Pass is not far from there. He could easily find a flat that is in a neighbouring suburb and catch the bus or train to Newmarket. Most likely, he will have to share with other people and there are always ads in the paper and on the net for flatmates close to the area. Try:

is it in Auckland City?? if so then it is quite expensive to rent there! and its not nice living in the city (i have) but you could live just over the bridge which isnt that far on the North shore, or Rodney which is half an hour away from the city or you could live in Gulf Harbour which is really nice and catch the ferry over to the city everyday have a look at the prices on Trade Me here is the address just click on this link http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Property/RegionListings.aspx?search=1&mcat=0350-5748-4233-&sidebar=1&132=FLAT&selected135=&selected136=&134=1&135=&29=&122=0&122=0&59=0&59=0

As a foreign student you may encounter issues with getting your own flat unless it is in specialist student hostels. Student accomodaton in Auckland is not cheap, you will be looking at $200 NZD per week upwards. You could look at homestay which basically means you get a room in someones home. The reduced cost maybe outweighed by the cost of travel from the home to Queen Street in central Auckland where the school is located.
Availabilty of student accomodation is best from November to February which is summer holidays.
Good Luck.
