For New Zealanders only please. I am a nature lover, should I travel North or South Island,?

Where exactly is Cannibal Bay? I love to hunt and fish, trek, am seeking peaceful vacation away from the rush of city life. Would like to find like minded friends for company and information. Have you a bit of help?

I admit that I'm not a Kiwi, but I've had two fantastic holidays in NZ. The diversity in the country is amazing (especially given its modest size). I would have to agree with the answers above that the South Island is more scenic. The Milford area, in particular, is beautiful and lush and the area around Queenstown is alpine in nature. The east coast south of Christchurch is home of a few varieties of penguins - cool. And up the coast just a bit you can check out the marbles of the gods, too (Moeraki boulders). Kaikoura is about 90 minutes north of Christchurch where you can swim with the dolphins in open ocean (weather permitting).

If you find your way to the North Island and haven't seen any thermal activity before, go to Rotorua and check out the geysers, mud pots, and steam vents. Not too far are the Waitomo caves with glow worms that are like little blue stars in the dark of the caves.

NZ is home to some of the nicest locals I've ever met - a fantastic destination to be sure!

P.S. here's a link to a 69 pg brochure (free) I recently found: www.moxon.net/downloads/load.php/pdfs/tr...

The southern end of the South Island is called Fiordland, and i is some of the most rugged and spectacular scenery anywhere. (That's where Lord of the Rings was filmed). Trekking is a popular activity there.

While you are in the South Island you may wish to visit Kaikoura and do some whale watching.

Enjoy your trip!

If you only have time for one island, I suggest the south for sheer dramatic beauty.
It has some incredible scenery and is quite easy to navigate around.
