I've never been to Melbourne, but I live in Auckland.
It's a good place to be a student, but if you're looking at living right in the city, it's pretty expensive. But thats the same as most cities I'd guess.
Depends what else you're looking for, like Melbourne is a warmer climate and probably rains less, also from my experiences (in Queensland and NSW) public transport is better in Australia.
