Gift ideas for host family in new zealand?

Darn, no food, I was going to say bring some peanut butter, as I don't know if they have that in New Zealand, I know that they just started getting it in Germany a little while ago. Bring them some pictures of where you live, maybe an Item that has some significance to your state/city. A lot of families like things that remind them of the person they've hosted. Other than that, perhaps just a few little things, like some toys if they have kids.

You don't say where you are from, but I assume the US.
I hope you enjoy your stay in Auckland.
Usually, a little and inexpensive gift is given in situations like yours, of something that relates to your home town, or your State.
The best place to get such items is from your local Town Council Office, Public Relations Office, or library.
Perhaps a bookmark, or a pen, or a badge, or a pennant-size flags, or a small handbook or road guide of your locality.
Sometimes if you ask your school, they can give you some pennants, or copies of the Yearbook.
Your local baseball club may give you some caps or badges.
You will probably be able to get such items free of charge.
Another idea is to ask your School Principle for a letter of good-will for you to pass on to the Principle of your buddy's school. It all makes for good international relations.

I have hosted many home stays and billeted students like yourself and I always enjoyed getting a book with pictures of your home area, a calendar for next year if available, recipe book, or coasters, pens or some other specialty from your area.

Something that's a memento from your hometown or state like your state sports team scarf, or a wine or spirit that is produced in your local area (obviously that would be for the host parents!).

Try to come up with something that they can actually use or play with rather than just sit on the shelf!

we have peanut butter in new zealand. get a token gift from where ever your from , like new york a statue of liberty type thing etc. not tacky as though, a token but nice

Yeah I agree with the others. Bring something that is either unique to where you come from (the US i'm guessing since you quoted using USD) or something which symbolises your country. And it's a good idea that you're not bringing food as New Zealand, along with Australia, have the strictest quarantine laws in the world, so bringing in food, plants and animals is strictly controlled (but peanut butter should be easy enough) : )

A nice gift would be something that is from your hometown, something that they can have to remember you by once you have returned. I do not know where you live but any kind of local souvenir would be great.
