There is a car fair on every Sunday (9-12) at the car park by Elllerslie Race Course, by green lane roundabout in Auckland (all cars have to have a valid WOF or they can't be sold so they should all qualify on that one).
There are usually hundreds of cars divided into several sections, including a below NZ$5000.
As usuall you get the entire range of cars and sellers so have a good look before you buy, and take the car for a test drive.
They have a change of ownership booth there so you can make the car legally your before you drive off. Good luck and I hope you will love NZ as much ad I did, I came her on holiday for the first time 8 years ago and moved here permanently 4 years ago. |

The Car Fair mentioned in the first answer is your best bet, but also the Auckland Backpackers in central downtown Auckland have a noticeboard where vacating backpackers try and sell their cars, and once a week they all park their cars on the street in the evening and everyone can come along and negotiate deals between backpackers who are leaving and want to sell cheap etc. However, they are usually vans on their last leg - but if you're a bit handy, New Zealand isn't that big so you'll probably make it! |
