The south Island possibly has more than the North Island. In the South Island some things you might like are bungy jumping in Central Otago, Whale watching at Kaikoura, the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, the Albatross Colony at the heads of the Otago Harbour, a glacier trip on the West Coast of the South Island, kayaking in the Abel Tasman National park, wine tasting in Marlborough (or Central Otago or North Canterbury), the World of Wearable Art in Nelson.
In the North Island you might like the Bay of Islands, Kelly Tarleton's in Auckland, the thermal area round Rotorua, Taupo, the central volcanic region and wine tasting in Hawkes Bay (or Auckland or Martinborough).
If you are renting a car don't take it across Cook Strait. Arrange a drop off in Picton or Wellington and pick one up on the other side. |

Get a lonely planet guide, it will suggest what to do in 10 days & will list all the thrills and nature stuff,or if you don't want to buy one, get one out of your library & bring it with you. How on earth would you spend $10k in 10 days!! $100 - $200 per day maybe, but $1k per day? Are you Kerry Packer's son or something? |

You may want to check out one of the backpacker buses as your mode of transporation . They will take you to all the "hot spots" on your route (there will be plenty of amazing stuff to see and do on any route you choose) and you'll get to see and do a lot in 10 days. I went with Stray and would HIGHLY recommend going with them. It was a blast. I just went to their website to get you the link and it looks like they've got a nice discount promo right now if you buy a pass by the 14th.
You may also want to check out the Lonely Planet's Thorntree forum thread on New Zealand. They were a great resource in planning my trip.
HAVE FUN! |

I lived in NZ for 19 years and travelled extensively, I then lived in Australia for 6 years so I would probably do thing I couldn't see at home.
A few ideas are......
Queenstown - skiing, adventure tourism, excitement, scenery
Fiordland - Milford Sound - scenery, boat trips,
West Coast (Sth Island) - cool small towns, glaciers, scenery, beaches,
Nelson & Marlbrough - markets, great weather, scenery, boating, reastaurants, seafood, wine
Wellington - cool upbeat city with cool cafes and clubs, museams
Rotorua - thermal geysers, Maori culture, cool buildings
Bay of Islands - islands, boating, beaches
Auckland - museams, sky tower, sailing, beaches, city
And there is so much more, my boyfriend (who is from England) did the KIWI experience and thought it was brilliant...thats another suggestion if you don't want to self-drive.
Hope this helps..
oh yeah - you don't need any visas if you are Australian. |

To answer your questions:
You definitley do not need any vaccinations and you could get around by bus, train, taxi or ferry.
Sights to See:
Auckland:
Auckland Zoo
Auckland Museum
Kelly Tarltons
Mission Bay (beach)
Sky Tower (it has a revolving restaurant and bungy jumping and is next to a casino)
There are also many volcanoes/mountains in Auckland
Rotorua:
Geyser parks
Zoos
Dunedin:
Cadbury Factory
Larnach Castle
Taeri Gorge Railway Trips
Here are some websites with ideas:
Wellington:

Also, if you type "(insert city name here) sights" into Google you can find many pages.
Hope I helped and Good Luck! |

If you have an Australian passport you wont need a visa, and you don't need any vaccinations.
Personally, I'd recommend checking out things that you wouldn't see at home. So, Rotorua's geo-thermal parks - there's this one which is between Rotorua and Taupo, and it's one of my favourite http://www.orakeikorako.co.nz/ . Wellington and Te Papa (interactive, fabulous, very 'kiwi' museum), Kaikoura, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mt. Cook etc. You could hire a car which would be easier to manage than a campervan.
$10k AD should be more than enough to ensure that you have a great time and get to stay in decent accommodation. |

No need for anything. No dangers in New Zealand from biting things apart from the annoying sandfly.
Head to Queenstown for thrills and Fiordland for nature.
Enjoy. |
