I think the neighbour hood needs to partly be decided based on where you will be working. There are many good neighbourhoods. Auckland is a very widely scattered city and travel around the city is not fantastic. You can spend hours getting from point A to Point B.It would also depend on what you can afford.

If you are working in South Auckland you would probably look at Howick, Bucklands Beach, Mellons Bay, Eastern beach, or Pakuranga , although they are not exactly South Auckland but near to. Central Auckland - it will be expensive but Remuera, Epsom, Mt Eden or One TreeHill , Ponsonby, Grey Lynn or Westmere a little cheaper.

On the North Shore Takapuna, Devonport or Bayswater which have easy access by ferry to the city, Northcote Point, Birkenhead are all near the Harbour Bridge also with ferry access. Further out any of the East Coast Bays are nice and varying in price.

West Auckland you could go to Mt Albert, or further out in a lovely bush environment Titirangi,

With so little information it is a little hard to give you a good answer.

I hope you find somewhere nice. Auckland is quite an expensive city rent or home purchase wise.

Auckland or Auckland City is a very big place and half of its population are Asians and lots of students. Most of the neighbourhoods are a mix of high and low areas. Not really a problem with crimes and etc. more importantly depending on where you would be working from or studying - you would want to look at a place near by. The traffic situation and parking is something you want to look at also. Most likely you would want to rent a place first and then maybe considering buying one later once you are familiar with what you are looking for.

Also there are people and businesses moving out of Auckland due to the cost of living, traffic, etc. so if you have options - maybe consider other cities such as Tauranga or Hamitlon, etc

Good luck.
