I hate to tell you but you will NOT be able to take the train to Hanmer Springs, as the train only goes up the coast and Hanmer Springs is inland!!
Bus is definately the best option and there would be several bus companies that go that way (as its quite popular and reasonably isolated).
I would book as I think that lots of people would go there over new year etc....but I remember staying in a camp ground, so if you have a tent maybe???

yes a bus is proberly your best option but maybe you should ask at the place you want to stay, how they suggest transport as there are a lot of tourists who go there and different bus lines that take them |
