Yup used to got there every Sept 26 on Dominion Day cos Timaru and South Canterbury was the only place closed on that day. Good old free and independent state of South Canterbury and the neighbouring Otago. Go the Highland Line. Played at some parties down there a few years ago. good town got family there

Its got an older population in general. Sort of a large retirement town. As soon as most younger people get out of school they move away for University. Nice relaxing place. Love the old bit of the town.
