Having second thoughts about moving to nz?

currently living in pretoria, south africa. Would like to get away from the crime, corruption and the black government. new zealand is a place that my wife and i are seriously considering for our young son. however after reading some of the stories of nz news, i am somewhat put off. murders every couple of days, armed robberies left right and centre. people getting stabbed, attempted abductions, pack rapes! this is the stuff we are trying to escape from! i would LOVE to live in nz but is crime as bad as the news makes it out to be? it would be better than here but how much better? any south africans living there? would we be better off in australia.

Get a life Pagrus!! can't you see your the only one who has warped views of NZ??? you should leave, see the rest of the world and then you might know how lucky you are!

Stop ranting about something you know little about, and if your going to label New Zealand as a whole country "unsafe" then how about talking about examples outside of auckland eh??
stop copying and pasting and get a life!!!

Sorry, but John S but you can see from the first 7 answerers that pagrus lives in a different world to the rest of us...

Hi Pretoria Disgruntled. Do yourself a big favour and save R15k, get on a plane and visit NZ. I got back last Sunday and I can confirm that whover is sending u the bad news, you probably need to ignore. Yes, there is SOME crime, but c'mon, they had a whole road 600 deaths last year (and we had 2400 on Easter weekend alone). As for murders etc, it is still big news if something happens, not like here where it is not even reported in the papers most of the time. The LACK of crime and the openess of New Zealanders is fantastic, and I can vouch for that myself. I will not even go into the stories such as net even locking the car or house I lived in in Albany, Auckland. Experience it for yrself, and GO! Remember that NZ only has 4,3mil people (and we have 47mil officially?), but if u measure crime per capita, then it simply does not exist if measured to what we have to endure. Probably the BEST advice I can give you is this: Do not just run away from SA because of all the things u mention in yr mail, you will NEVER find peace anywhere. You need to run TO a place which will satisfy the lifestyle you desire! If it is peace, great and friendly people (even if they are half Socialist) and a well managed country with little crime and a good work/life balance, you will love NZ.
As for Australia, (I was there too), they have MUCH more crime and a lot more violent population. But u can still not compare it in any way to SA. We RULE!

Hi there, I live in New Zealand and know many SA families that have move to NZ. The crime is minimal and that is why you hear it on the news, it is big news in NZ. We never lock our cars and have only just starting locking our house when we go to bed at night our children run free in our unfenced section till late at night. Come for a visit you won't be disapointed.

Go for it. I'm not sure where you got your information from New Zealand is a good place for families. I lived there for quite a few years with my family and we had no problems. Choose your area and you will be ok. I would go for any area outside the main cities, these are the ares where people care and watch out for each other. I would suggest you post another question and ask people where the best areas are and ask them to support their opinions on crime statistics. Also, we need to know your occupations to see how easily you might get a job in the area you would like to go for. All in all I would say New Zealand is a very good choice and I have travelled the world.

Hi there

I live in New Zealand.... Maybe you would be better of moving to a small town in new Zealand rather then a big city if you are so concerned about crime..

I live in the Wairarapa

There is.. a TON of South Africans living here. The crime is no big deal, there's more in Australia trust me. If you're not sure then don't come, no use rushing something. But seriously, you will definitely meet a lot of South Africans here that have moved for the same reason, particularly if you are moving to Auckland.

Hi

Where I live we have a large population of South Africans and Sudanese. Apparently they love it here because the climate is very similar. I work in the government and we have some health professionals who are south African (Doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists etc). We even have a few people from Ghana here.

I live in Australia and yes bad crap happens. It happens everywhere. I quite often go to work, and leave my house unlocked. I still feel fairly safe walking down the main street at night.

The thing with news is that media companies need to make money. And bad news makes more money than good news. So you never get to hear all the really good things; and all the bad things are incredibly over exaggerated.

Badmouthing Australia (and New Zealand too apparently) is the new best favourite past-time. We cope it because we are so laid back and relaxed. We don't care what religion/gender/sexual orientation/culture you are, as long as you are a decent person and you are willing to work and talk to your neighbours once in a while :)

New Zealand is a lovely country with lovely people. And you can move between New Zealand & Australia quite freely.

Hey, I'm not South African, but I live in New Zealand, on the North Shore (in Auckland). I'm not sure about the exact stats, but the shore has very little crime, I can't remember the last time there was a murder or rape. Also, many South Africans have moved here already, I went to see the Blues play the Sharks at north harbour stadium and there were almost as many Sharks fans there as Blues fans.
So basically, don't worry, it's not nearly as bad as the news makes it sound, as long as you don't move to Otara or somewhere like that which is pretty bad

hi there.
I think that because we are such a small country, the crime that does happen ends up in the news for weeks and weeks on end, maybe they have nothing else to talk about therefore every little bit of new information they get has to be made into a whole new news story. Yes we have our fair share of crime, but every country does. We don't have murders every couple of days, and as for armed robberies, well those are common wherever you go.
Seems like your source gives you plenty info on the bad,but what about the pages and pages of good this country has to offer?? and yes, there are thousands of Sth Africans living here,we even have a refugee shelter for them to help them get on there feet when they arrive here

Gilsh
LOL u have it wrong there are hardly murders and mostly they are in south auckland ! and i have hardly heard of armed robberies. When there is any type of crime from robbery to rape to murder even stabbing it will be on the news because it is unheard of whoever you got your information from has it wrong there hasnt been a recent murder on the news for a good month or so

sueby40
There are only a few minority which commit these atrocious crimes in NZ. You wonder what sort of home these 'people', if that's what you can call them, are brought up in. NZ is growing in size, and unfortunately the crime seems to have gone up due to this. I guess the crime rate here is nothing compared to many overseas countries, and we have just voted in a government which promises to get tough on crime.

I would advise anyone that intends to visit New Zealand to first log onto the local yahoo news website, www.yahoo.co.nz to witness the horror of rapes, murders and violent bashings and assaults that are occurring in this country on a daily basis. Just monitor the site for a few days to witness the frequency of crime.

New Zealand has turned into a very dark and dangerous country with many areas of Auckland too dangerous to visit. If coming to New Zealand do not visit areas of Auckland like Mangere, Papatoetoe, Otara, Manurewa, Wiri, Middlemore, Otahuhu, East Tamaki, Takanini, Westfield, Onehunga, Kelston, Penrose, Manukau, Homai and Drury to name a few.

Areas of Auckland central city are also very dangerous, especially at night. This has horrific crime and violence. If visiting be very very careful, get into a “Corporate Cab” that is driven by a New Zealander, if you don’t want to be driven 10 times further than you need to go and get ripped off. Preferably get picked up by friends and/or a reputable international tourist company shuttle/bus.

Unless you are staying and travelling with friends familiar with the “dark spots” of this country be very careful.

An honest and concerned Kiwi
