Hey mate

Queen street is pretty much the "main street" in the Auckland CBD, everything is close to it. As for living, it will depend where you want to live, its cheaper the further out of the city you are. Finding jobs is dificult at the moment due to the economy, but depending on what kind of job you are looking for.

Queen Street is one of the main streets. You should be able to find work somewhere, but I do agree that you should be careful - it isn't one of the greatest places, theres a lot of violence in some areas, but you should be fine in the city. It more of the less-main places where the thugs hang around.

Um. Queen St. is good nice and close to everything. Just don't walk around there by your self in the early morning! There is quite a lot of violence towards tourists here. Maybe try somewhere like Wellington? or Melbourne, australia?
