The 5 December 1890 election was the first "one man one vote" election. Women didn't get the vote until 1893. The Liberals won, but the result was not immediately clear. It was the Liberal government voted in at that election who brought in the right to vote for women.

John Ballance (who became Premier) won his seat by only 27 votes.

It occured at a time of strikes and depression in New Zealand, and led to significant social and political reform.
