How do Australian and NZ kids/teens compare to each other? |
I was wondering what your opinions are on this.
I go to school in Australia but was born in NZ. I find kids at my school extremly friendly and caring, there are no fights hardly and people go out of their way to help you (but it is a private christain school so they're all like that in OZ).
I wonderd if there were ANY schools at all like this in NZ?
For some reason I have in my head a picture of most New Zealand schools having major violence, drug and alchohol issues.
My cousin over there said that kids at his old school (Havelock North high) sat on the fields at lunch getting stoned!.
Of course there will be variations in schools with different types of areas, but I was wondering, are there any schools in NZ which are happy, safe, and next to no violence and not too many drug and alchohol problems?
How do Aus and NZ kids compare to each other? I understand that there are ratbags in both bunches, but tell me the differences you notice between both from personal experiance.
What are the main differences?
Thanks in advance :) |

Excuse me, but I don't know what public schools you are thinking of missy, but certainly not mine. I go to a decile 10 school, (1 being the lowest) and my school is extremely safe, there are no kids getting 'stoned' or 'drunk' that I have heard from any schools in Auckland, let alone mine, and it seems to me that Australia's public schools are much more rugged than New Zealand's (the incident of those school boys gang-bashing a developmentally disabled girl, urinating on her and then selling DVD's of the attack for profit) those things are unheard-of where I'm from, there may be some bad eggs out there, but its a very tiny number, you wouldn't notice though because they don't put the good students on the news, just the bad ones, don't believer what you hear on the TV, its always blown out of proportion. |

schools have individuals at them, individuals do different things
there are private church schools in NZ where most of the kids are good kids, and a few like to get stoned, some of the good kids see it,some dont, experiences will vary
NZ and OZ kids are kids, much the same with different accents

they are pretty much the same. i go to a private school and everyone is very nice and welcoming. No one ever gets in trouble and everyone there actually wants to learn which is quite refreshing. Ive been at a private school for a few years and i am very motivated about learning and achieving my best. i also went to a public school in primary and found everyone nice as well. i think most schools in new zealand are great. sure some are a bit bad but you just need to know which ones to avoid and you can easily have a great education. |

Yes, you will find great environments for school kids to grow up in in the Private schools. It is just the public ones that become especially subject to drug, violence etc problems. |

Both are similar cultures
Major differences are in education. Australia doesn't currently have a countrywide educational curriculum, the states educational authorities have a big say in what is taught in each state. In nz our educational authorites have a narrower focus in the curriculum, but this does lead to a lot of boredom in school.
Kids in major cities of both countries are getting over-influenced by the USA in both fashion, music & drug-use - while teachers no longer have the ability to sucessfully discpline children for their misdemeanours (like the good old days).
Outside the main centres, the lifestyle is a lot slower but kids seem to drift to the cities in their teens.
No one answer, but I think we need to kick back to the '80s model of core education & proper discipline! |
