If you are wishing to use public transport your options are quite limited as there are not many services that go through Greytown.
There are trains that go between Woodside (which is the railway station for Greytown) and Wellington where you could catch a bus or train to Auckland and catch a bus from there to Orewa. Buses take you from Woodside to Greytown. There are also buses which can take you from Greytown to Palmerston North from where there are plenty of buses to Auckland. See routes 200 and 204 at the Metlink site listed below.
Long distance buses from Palmerston North include NakedBus (I am not kidding and please don't report me it really is the name of the company and I pointed out to them it wasn't a good idea for the web but they said it was well established and too late to change it!- it implies basic service without any frills) or Newmans/Intercity.
If you go by car you can get a detailed itinerary at Wises, I have given it below but had some problems with it. However as long as you take State Highway 2 north from Greytown, go across the Manawatu Gorge or Pahiatua Track in the direction of Palmerston North then follow signs to State Highway 1 and take it north all the way to Auckland you should be fine. Directions from there to Orewa should be easy to pick up from Wises- I am a Wellingtonian and get lost in Auckland so I dare not give you any advice on that part of the trip lol.
PS I would not recommend going via Napier and up the Napier/Taupo Road unless you have plenty of time!
