I had the same question 25 years ago.. so i got a job as a photojournalist and I spent ten years of my life travelling around, not only for free but I was making money during the travelling.

That's not a stupid question. I worked for a firm owned by an airline and got standby flights at 10% of the normal fare. Hitch hike and WWOOF; work on organic farms for your keep. If you go to Canada or the US, drive cars for Auto Driveaway to get from A to B. None of these suggestions are completely free, but they save you a helluvalotofmoney.
