How does New Zealand compare to expenses and job prospects in the midwest of the US?

I'm planning to study abroad in Christchurch next year, and I might come back for my Masters in either Speech-Language Therapy or Audiology. How easy is it to get a job in either of these careers in NZ? Also, how affordable is it to live there? I would be able to live on my own here in Missouri, US, because it's one of the cheapest places to live in the US (WAY cheaper than NY or California. Couldn't imagine being able to live there). I'm contemplating perhaps eventually moving to NZ long-term; how easily can I live on my own off the salary of a Speech-Language Therapist (From NZ$40,000 to NZ$82,000, depending on skill level and such)? What kind of lifestyle can a salary of NZ$50,000 get, maybe? Thanks for any help!

You mention careers linked to health sector so [a] it would be reasonably easy to find a job in that field. If you take a mid-point in your salary range that would be around $60,000 which would give you a comfortable lifestyle in SOME parts of N.Z. [ not Auckland or Wellington , due to housing costs ]. As others have noted N.Z. has more to offer than just money, great scenery plenty of beaches, sports, activities, nice people , fairly relaxed life-style etc.

40-80k you can support yourself

lifestyle in NZ is about far more than money, its about being a peaceful nation with no Nukes, few guns, low polution and lots of coastline and the rest

Hi, I am an American (lived in Chicago, NY, and Atlanta) living in Hamilton, NZ (in central North Island). While I was at the States, I was working as an OT. I made pretty good money. After moving to NZ, I gave up OT as a practitioner, but still contribute in research. I work in a government organization and my salary is in the high $50k. I think I'm managing well, but at times it feels a bit tight. I'm not frivolous with my spending, yet I can't really stray from my budget. Prices of food, milk, discretionary items have been going up and up.
You can have a decent lifestyle (i'm pretty sure Christchurch standard of living is comparable to Hamilton) if you are smart and thrifty with your savings, and have a good awareness of maintaining a budget.
