How does one going about obtaining a work visa in New Zealand or Australia? |
My friend is wanting to travel to either New Zealand or Australia and live and work there for a while. He has no idea about the process of obtaining a visa or anything of that nature. Anyone know what the process is that he should be going through right now? |

For New Zealand, the best place to start is the Immigration New Zealand website - the official government site.
Depending on how long your friend wants to visit, he should see if he qualifies for a working holiday visa (enables him to stay for 6-12 months, but he'll only be able to work in each job for up to 3 months). Excerpt from the website:
"Who can get a working holiday scheme Work Visa or Permit?
Young people from overseas may be eligible to get a working holiday scheme Work Visa or Permit if:
* they’re from a country that has a working holiday scheme agreement with New Zealand and
* they’re at least 18 years old and no more than 30 and
* they’re not bringing children with them and
* they haven't been in New Zealand under a working holiday scheme before and
* they have enough funds to purchase a return ticket."
If he wants to stay longer, or doesn't qualify for the working holiday scheme, he'll need a work permit or visa. There are seven different streams (too much information to include here - so, see http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/worktemporarily/howdoiapply/ )
Depending on where he lives, there may be Immigration New Zealand staff near him, they'll be able to provide more information if he doesn't like searching online - see http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/aboutnzis/newzealandworldwide.htm to check out where.

Contact the appropriate embassy nearest to home and apply for a visa and a work permit.
The work permit is tough to get unless the applicant has exceptional skills that are in demand. The embassy can tell you what their current needs are.
