How far is it from the Auckland airport to Whangarei?

Can anyone tell me the driving distance between the 2? I would like to get a reasonable estimate on how long a drive would be to Whangarei, so I can price hiring a driver =). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you just fly? According to Air New Zealand's Grabaseat website you can get up there for $73 - that's a pretty good deal & it'll only take 30 minutes.

Alternatively there's always Intercity buses (and a couple of smaller operators as well - the Northliner is popular with tourists).

Depending on the time of day driving from the airport can be a nightmare because you have to use some of the busiest roads in NZ to get out of Auckland.

It's a long way away. Almost 200 km's!

Hiring a driver cost you big-time. Better to get a rental car and drive there yourself. Or book a domestic flight between Auckland and Whangarei. Sadly there's no train service anymore.

!!Red!!
From Auckland airport to Whangarei is about 180km... From West Auckland to Whangarei takes me about 2 hours depending on traffic.

From the airport to West auckland it takes me about 45mins again depending on traffic.

So there's a rough estimate time and k's to Whangarei from Auckland. Awesome ride to Whangarei too. Be careful going through Waiwera because the roads are quiet winedy and slippery when wet. Also be careful going through the Brenderwyn Gorge thats pretty much the same and the roads are smaller.

Sorry if there's spelling errors in a rush.. Enjoy your trip to Whangarei. I think while you're there have a look at Onerahi and Whangarei falls in Tikipanga and even try and get out to Orakura beach thats about an hours drive from Whangarei..

Auckland Central to Whangarei is about 170 km - should be about a 3 hour drive.
It can take an hour at busy times to get from the Airport to Downtown Auckland.
Do not take the Expressway from Orewa to Puhoi, go the longer way around. Most (maybe all) rental car companies don't like their cars, when driven by tourists, on this road as the toll gates find it difficult to read overseas credit cards. It can cause headaches. Besides, now the traffic pressure is off the old main route, it's a quiet scenic road.

A few good hours.

Its around a 3 hour drive, depending on how slow or fast you drive and the way that you go.
