Yeah they're not actually very expensive, and the process of getting into college/uni here is different too. It's not very competetive at all! Everyone gets in. If you don't do well at high school you can just wait until you are 20+years old and you can get into uni, no questions asked. But most people start at 18/19.
I must say there is no school spirit at NZ colleges though. Not like ones in the US. There generally aren't sports teams or mascots or anything like that, but there are dorm rooms so you can mingle with classmates that way. College here is basically: go in. learn. leave.
The education is good, yes. Well, so I have been told anyway! I'm starting in two weeks to do a one year course.
Oh yeah another thing, there are no four-year and two-year colleges here, they're all one and the same. You go to the same building and just do a shorter or longer degree.
Hope this helped! I really want to go to college in the US, so I have been doing my research about the differences lol |

New Zealand Universities aren't good value for money for foreign students educationally. The standards aren't very high anymore.
Better off trying Canada or the UK... |

If you are talking about High schools then yes we have some really great high schools, not only in private schooling but also public.
I you want to know about universitys then we also have some great universities with Auckland university being voted in the top ten in the world a few years ago. The others are just as good as well. |

I think in NZ you are probably talking about Universities. For comparison, look at something like the Times Higher Education Supplement. It also depends on the area of study. Auckland for example is ranked 65 in the world overall, but its medical school is significantly better (29th I think). I know overall it was ranked above the London school of economics and does exhanges with Stanford and Georgetown. So if you go to any NZ University it will be on par with a good US University (obviously, Ivy League, Berkely, or Cambrdige/Oxford have more prestige) but they are equivelent to Britain. Make sure you go to a proper university and not a technical institute as they are on par with a community college. perhaps below. A NZ degree would generally be considered equivelent to a British one as they are based on the same system.
and the above poster is talking about NZ residents. There is open entry for some course but not for others (say medicine and you need good grades to stay in law). open entry is now gone for auckland too. International students may also have slightly higher entry criteria. The other option is to do an exchange at some time.
It will be cheap because the NZ dollar has plummeted, so you US dollar almost buys 2 NZ ones. I have come across quite a few americans doing a semester or so and travelling and they have loved it. |

Thats what I was going to say...here our secondary schools are called both high schools and colleges. When you leave secondary school you can go to a variety of tertiary education facilities....university, polytechnics ( polytech)...but it depends on what you want to study.
The universities here have a good reputation worldwide...some universities have different specialties ( universities are Otago, Lincoln, Canterbury, Victoria, Massey, Waikato and Auckland)..look them up |

That depends
In new zealand college is what other countries may refer to as highschool (13 to like 18 year olds)
and what other countries may call college is called university in new zealand |
