I have attached the link to the New Zealand Citizenship Pages (part of internal affairs website) which details the general requirements for a grant of citizenship.

That site tells you that
EITHER
You have received your permanent residence before 21 April 2005, and
Have been ordinarily resident in New Zealand for the last 3 years.

OR

You have received your permanent residence on or after 21 April 2005, and
Have had your New Zealand permanent residence for the last 5 years.

polly
i wish it was 2 years!!!
ive lived here for nearly 3 and a half n it isn't yet certain that we will get residency and you have to have residency befor you can go for citizenship.I think you have to have your residency for 2 years befor you can then go for citizenship and again its not simple. You then have to stay here for so many years befor you can leave long term.Id ring the nz Immigration rather than looking on the site as the sight isnt that clear about this matter.
one thigs for certain its isnt as easy as people think! good luck

Check out the Citizenship pages of the Department of Internal Affairs (www.dia.govt.nz)
You have to be a permanent resident before you can become a citizen.

Murphy
i think it's 2 years and also if you have been paying taxes etc.

Mine was two years

but thats only due to my hubby sponsering me for residency ( we had to prove that we had been genuine couple for two years,) not like when some people decided to "get hitched" so they can live in anouther place.

I'm pretty certain it is two years.
