Give it 8-9 hours so you can stop and take a look at the view along the way, especially round the central plateau which has some pretty impressive looking volcanoes to look at. In fact if you are coming in (our) winter why not spend a couple of days skiing there. If your coming in summer you could take a walk around one of the volcanoes.
I'm not sure where the deer comment came from...you are more likely to bump into sheep herds (but no on the main route). We have quite twisty roads in parts so yeah, just take it easy.

The intercity coahes take about thirteen hours.
But if you stick to SH1 and avoid the detours and minimise stops you should shave a third off that.
Just bear in mind there is a lot of deer farming on North Island. Hitting an escaped one can seriously finish your day. |

well, it takes about 8 to 9 hours, also it can depend on when u r going wot route ur going to take, if ur goin to stop on the way, wot the traffic conditions are goin to be like, and wot part of auckland you are leaving from to wot part of wellington you are goin too. |

Iv travelled the route,it usally takes between 6 to 8 hours depending on weather,traffic,speed and if your traveling with kids or not. |
