I live in Auckland and it is very safe for travellers. If you are worried, just don't go to Karangahape Rd or parts of South Auckland at night by yourself. The rest is perfectly safe.

Auckland is a pretty safe place though there are a couple of areas to be weary about. I would recommend you stear clear of Myers Park at night time and try not to wander around by yourself at 4am. Taxis are really cheap around the city centre and you will have no troubles finding one to take you where you need to go when you need to get there...

Just like anywhere, there will be dodgyness, and a few crooks. Some 'gangs' as well, but not too bad when you compare it to other places. NZ on a whole is safe compared to places offshore

Be aware - just be aware and don't do stupid things that will make you vulnerable.
There are some crims out there, but probably nowhere near as many as in other cities of around the same size in the rest of the world.
In general - anyone, tourist or local is pretty safe.
