How unsafe is Christchurch city at night compared to let's say Sydney?
Last night I read that there were a few attacks on tourists around the city area. This is what the mayor of the city had to say.
"The events of the last 24 hours have reinforced my concern for the safety of citizens and others in the central city area in the early hours of the morning, you have to be very cautious about moving through the city," says Bob Parker, Christchurch Mayor.
If the mayor of the city admits the place is dangerous at night, then it must be pretty bad.
Are there any Christchurch locals on here that want to share your views and compare to other places you have been to at night? Additional Details Other than that, can you also tell me some positive things about the city as I would love to visit it some day :)
Hi there Choice mate. I am a local from Christchurch and unfortunately this definietly true and our mayor Mr Parker is quite right to his comments about it. Even from my personal experience of wandering through the city even at at least 11pm I feel slighty uneasy and very wary of whether or not something may happen. Its really ashame especially seeing as New Zealand is considered as being a really safe country but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Whereas I have been overseas and countries like Singapore are brilliant in safety. You could pratically wander around the vibrant and exciting city centre at 1am in the morning and it was incredible how relaxed and carefree I felt compared to wandering the streets during the night in Christchurch. I have also been to Sydeny during the night and unfortunately Christchurch probably seems to be just as bad. Oh well Sydney was a brilliant place to visit anyway and Christchurch is exactly the same for a tourists hopefully. Christchurch is a great place to live with many fantastic things for tourists to do as we are very priviliged to be so close ot so many great things such as Peninsulas, Mountains, beaches etc and I enjoy livining here. Its just that gloomy downside I guess of Christchurch being a bit dodgy and unsafe after 12am so its best to not really venture out around that time but apart from that its a really nice place. Haha Thanks there mate most people in that question considered it to be bs really lol ah well oh yeah and in Christchurch there is plenty of stuff to do: go swimming, skiing, Arts Centre, Cathedral in the middle of the city, great botanical gardens probably one of the best in the world.... May be a bit off kilter lol but just read up and had a look at ya profile and you seem a really nice guy I am 16 if you are wondering and ironically my Aunt and Uncle in live in Palmy lol
