well it can get quite nippy in Christchurch in the winter...especially the nights which are crisp! There can be those very cold days in the winter too where it struggles to get above 5oC...however in the summer it can get quite hot (early-mid 30's).. it is a city which experiences all the seasons!! I would definately have a warm coat, scarf, good socks and shoes and gloves for the winter, but in summer shorts and T-shirt would be all you need.
Climate is dry for most of the year, cold winters and hot dry summers...any storms coming from the south seem to reach Christchurch and it does snow there...but it doesn't do it often (ie once a season) and it doesn't hang around long either.
Are you asking if the places is asthmatic???? I'm not sure if thats what you want, but I do know with the smog people who have asthma problems can suffer a bit there! |

NZ is a country that really does have the four seasons!!.
Winter is cold! you won't be in t-shirts and shorts, make sure you take jackets, long pants etc
For NZ weather go to the NZ Met Service for precise info.

Christchurch can get very smoggy in the winter so be very wary for asthma. Sidewalks and get quite icey first thing in the mornings.
.
You will enjoy the long hot summer days - especially with the daylight savings.
Enjoy your trip. |

July is winter there!
If you are already used to winters, that won't be such a problem. Bring warm clothes, jackets, gloves and proper shoes to wear during winter.
If it's anything like Oz, it's be cold during winter, pretty cool during spring (if you've got hay fever this will be the time they would start acting up), blazing hot in the summer and warm to cool during autumn, but then it still depends where you are in the country. |

June-August are the winter months for southern hemisphere. It will be bitterly cold when you arrive in Christchurch, so bring good coat, gloves and scarf and any other warm clothes. Spring is very nice there, but it can be crisp in the evenings with the wind as Christchurch and surrounds are flat. Smog isnt good in winter, especially for asthmatics. |

Probably mid-50s (12 C) as a high. If the sun is out, it will be quite nice. If it's cloudy, rainy, or windy--it will not be fun. Take warm clothes and plan to dress in layers.
Take note- if you're from the States, you will notice a big difference in the indoor temperatures. Houses and building are usually poorly insulated, central heat is VERY rare, and log burners and space heaters are the most common form of home heating. Take this into consideration when finding housing, because seeing your breath while you're laying in bed is NOT fun!
Good luck! |
