Don't listen to all the people telling you this is difficult. Traveling abroad is much easier than most Americans make it out to be, especially if you're carrying a US passport; I'm a young American woman and travelled alone for a bit less than a year and had a great time and almost no trouble.

About Australia: As an American, you can go to Australia easily. You have to get a 6-month or 1-year tourist visa from an Australian embassy (you can do this by mail) or online through their ETA service (but that one only lasts 3 months, costs $20); you can renew any of these while you are there. Applying is just a very simple form and a payment which depends on the kind of visa you want. You can't work on a tourist visa, but you can for example rent an apartment.

Australia also has a "working holiday" visa which allows you to stay longer and work a bit while you're there. The visa is a bit different for people from the USA than for people from other countries, and as long as you've graduated from high school and have a US passport you can do this. It sounds perfect for you, lasts for a year, and lets you work while you're in the country: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/462/

For New Zealand, US passport holders don't need any visa at all for up to three months... just show up at the airport and they'll let you in. If you want to stay longer, you have to apply for a visa at their embassy or consulate... just like Australia, you can just mail the application to them. You can't work on their tourist visas, either.

As in Australia, New Zealand offers a Working Holiday Visa. You have to be between the ages of 18 and 30, and it allows you to take any jobs you are offered for up to 1 year. Here is the info on that: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday/unitedstatesofamericaworkingholidayscheme.htm

You can find many jobs in New Zealand that require little or no skill and are very easy to apply for.

Welcom to NZ if you decide to come.
I really want to go to the USA.

I just moved back from living two years in NZ. If you are under 30 you can get a 1 year working holliday visa no problem. It takes about 20 mins online and you get a reply in 1 or 2 days. just go to http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday

Please, if you are not happy here, LEAVE
you will see that other countries are not nearly as accommodating
to people like you, as one who has traveled the world, this is still the country with the most freedoms and safest all around.

So my advice, Take a trip, a very LONG trip!

Freedom is not free, thanks to all the brave soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that I can tell you to take this trip!!
